Housing Advocates Condemn Christie’s Inaction on Lead Poisoning Prevention
Governor Chris Christie has pocket vetoed a bill that would appropriated $10 million for the Lead Hazard Control Assistance Fund, which provides New Jersey property owners financial assistance to treat lead-based paint hazards in their houses. Christie Administration Announces Innovative Loan Program to Increase Housing Options for Nursing Home Transitions
The New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (HMFA), an affiliate of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA), together with New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Aging Services (DoAs) recently launched the Money Follows the Person Housing Partnership Program (MFPHPP). This innovative loan program will provide $2.85 million in capital subsidy to eligible nonprofit and for-profit developers to build rental housing for individuals transitioning from nursing facilities to community settings.

The bill (A-3343) requires nursing homes to encourage residents to designate a beneficiary to accept any remaining money in their personal needs allowance (PNA) accounts. The time-consuming probate process is avoided when the money passes directly to a survivor.

The grant for the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs is specifically provided by HUD-VASH’s Extraordinary Administrative Fees (EAF) program. The EAF program is providing 52 public housing agencies across the country with a total of $5.4 million in funding to support innovative practices and develop tools to administer the HUD-VASH program and reduce the amount of time that it takes for a veteran to locate and move into permanent housing.
