Pallone, Bipartisan Committee Leaders Request Urgent EPA Briefing on Drinking Water in Flint, Michigan
WASHINGTON, DC – January 18, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06), who serves as ranking Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, led a letter to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy requesting an urgent briefing in the coming days on the drinking water in Flint, Michigan.
“The public health crisis unfolding in Flint, Michigan is tragic and absolutely unacceptable,” said Pallone. “The long-term effects of lead poisoning are devastating and well-documented, so I urge both the state of Michigan and the federal government to offer all appropriate assistance. We owe it to the children and families of Flint to find an expedient solution to this avoidable crisis.”
In April 2014, the city of Flint switched from water provided by the Detroit water system to water treated by Flint and sourced from the Flint River. Several reports have suggested that the Flint River water may contain contaminants in the drinking water that could cause liver, kidney or central nervous system problems and increased risk of cancer.
