Lautenberg Announces Millions in New Funding for Housing in New Jersey

-

WASHINGTON, D.C. – March 18, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Today, Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) announced millions of dollars in new funding for New Jersey’s public housing authorities to rehabilitate and modernize public housing units in New Jersey.  The capital improvement money was included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed into law by President Obama.    “As families in New Jersey struggle with this tough economy, access to affordable housing is more important than ever ,” Sen. Lautenberg said.  “These funds will give housing authorities resources to better serve their residents and help ensure thousands of families across New Jersey can remain in safe, affordable housing.”

Lack of affordable housing continues to be a major problem, with a national shortage of as many as 12 million low-income housing units expected by 2015.  Nationally, more than half of public housing families are “extremely low-income” and more than 50 percent of households include seniors or people with disabilities.  Funding for public housing decreased dramatically — more than $1 billion since FY 2001 – over the past eight years.

Sen. Lautenberg has always been a strong advocate of improved public housing.  In 2007, for example, Sen. Lautenberg secured a commitment from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to extend a deadline for New Jersey housing authorities to convert to a new, more burdensome “asset management” accounting system.  Sen. Lautenberg secured the change after urging former HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson for an extension and then successfully adding language to the FY2007 Supplemental Appropriations Bill to extend the deadline.  As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Sen. Lautenberg will continue fighting to provide adequate funding for public housing authorities.
