Senators Lautenberg, Menendez Announce Nearly $16 Million In Federal Funding For Economic Development and Affordable Housing
WASHINGTON, DC – July 6, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senators Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded nearly $16 million dollars in funding for New Jersey through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG), HOME, and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) community programs. These programs in turn provide grants and other assistance to State, local and private entities aimed at providing and expanding affordable housing, services and economic opportunities for low and moderate income people, including programs that serve families and individuals in particularly precarious circumstances.
“This troubled economy hinders the ability of local governments to provide the essential services our communities need. Whether providing housing assistance, helping revitalize neighborhoods, or rebuilding crumbling infrastructure, these funds will help New Jersey communities during these difficult times,” Lautenberg said.
“In these difficult times, we have to help ensure that New Jersey families have a place to call home and economic opportunities to keep food on the table,” said Menendez. “These funds will help families and communities in New Jersey that are struggling have the opportunities necessary to stay afloat.”
The Community Development Block Grants program provides annual grants to States and local governments to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low and moderate income people.
The Emergency Shelter Grants program provides annual grants to State, local, and private entities to improve the quality and number of emergency homeless shelters.
The Home program helps to expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low and very low income families by providing grants to States and local governments to fund housing programs that meet local needs and priorities.
The HOPWA program provides housing assistance and related support services to local units of government, States and non-profit organizations for projects that benefit low income persons medically diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and their families.
