Kean Introduces EMS SUPPORT Act to Create Federal Grants for Emergency Medical Services
Rep. Thomas Kean, Jr. (R-NJ) introduced the EMS SUPPORT Act of 2026, which would direct the Secretary of Health and Human Services to make grants for facility upgrades, equipment, training or services for EMS personnel.
Local officials quoted in Kean’s release, including Clinton Councilman Ross Traphagen and Bridgewater Councilman Tim Ring, said EMS agencies face rising operating costs, staffing shortages and the cost of maintaining equipment and ambulances. Traphagen said the bill could ease financial pressure on local taxpayers.
Kean’s office noted that his Fire Grants and Safety Act was signed into law in 2024, reauthorizing the U.S. Fire Administration and two firefighter grant programs for five years.
Why it matters
The bill is a proposal and has not become law. If enacted, it would create a new federal funding source for local emergency medical services, which are part of municipal budgets.
