Construction Starts on South Jersey Broadband Project Backed by $24.1 Million
Construction has begun on the South Jersey Broadband project, a regional internet expansion supported by $24.1 million in federal funding that Rep. Jefferson Van Drew (R-NJ) said he secured. Van Drew joined local officials at the groundbreaking.
The project will bring more than 180 miles of new fiber infrastructure to the region. According to Van Drew, it should increase competition among internet providers and bring faster, more affordable service to residents and businesses.
Salem County Commissioner Director Benjamin H. Laury said the project will extend high-speed internet to underserved areas in Salem and Cumberland counties, connecting homes, businesses, schools and public buildings.
Why it matters
Better broadband access can factor into home and business location decisions in the affected counties. Residents in underserved areas may gain more provider options as construction proceeds.
