Congressman Andrews Announces $2.2 Million Grant to Fight Veteran Homelessness
WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 15, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Last week, the Department of Veterans Affairs awarded nearly $300 million in competitive block grants all across the nation to aid more than 120,000 veterans. More than $2 million of those grants will go to groups in South Jersey to help get struggling veterans get back on their feet. The Department of Veterans Affairs will partner with these non-profit groups to cut down on the number of homeless veterans in our region.
The Catholic Charities Dioceses of Camden will receive $1.2 million, allowing it to reach out to over 250 families in the area. This money will prevent veterans from becoming homeless and rapidly re-house those veterans who are without homes. Volunteers of America Delaware Valley will receive just over $1 million to work with another 250 families throughout South Jersey. This money will go towards providing our veterans with necessary services such as financial aid, housing counseling, and legal assistance. The $2.2 million will allow both groups to proactively seek out and improve the lives of homeless veterans.
“Our veterans put themselves in danger for the wellbeing of this country and it is only fitting that we give what we can to help these heroes get back on their feet, said Congressman Andrews. “While we have a long way to go in improving employment, education, housing and health care for our veterans, I am proud to see these quality non-profits get a much-needed boost to aid in their efforts to improve the lives of our struggling warfighters.”
Congressman Andrews applauds the work of the Department of Veterans Affairs for their aid to veterans both in South Jersey and nationwide. These grants were highly competitive, and the amount of money coming into New Jersey is a testament to the effectiveness of the Catholic Charities Dioceses of Camden and the Volunteers of America Delaware Valley.
As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman Andrews has been a longtime supporter of veterans and their families. Mr. Andrews was instrumental in passing H.R 2055, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2012, which provided funding for low interest loans to veterans to purchase housing. This act also provided for vocational rehabilitation programs, which help veterans learn marketable skills and get high paying jobs
