WASHINGTON, D.C. – (RealEstateRama) — Assembly Republican Whip Scott T. Rumana (R–Bergen, Passaic, Morris, Essex) applauded Gov. Chris Christie’s veto of a measure that would have raised the minimum wage.
“Not only would a $15 an hour minimum wage have reversed our economic progress, it would have disproportionately driven up the cost of living and killed job opportunities for lower- and middle-class families. A higher minimum wage would have meant higher costs for food, gas, and home goods.
“With increased costs for payroll, major corporations would have been forced to transfer those costs to consumers, cut back jobs, or both. Many of our state’s small businesses are working harder than ever to make ends meet while providing good-paying jobs. They would have undoubtedly been the hardest hit by a minimum-wage jump to $15/hour and have been forced to make drastic decisions about their futures and the futures of their employees.
“If New Jersey Democrats really want to help those in need, we need to focus on ways to bring down the cost of living in New Jersey and that includes property tax reform – something Republicans have been pushing for more than a decade.”
