REP. PASCRELL ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $2.4 MILLION IN HUD GRANTS TO PATERSON, NORTH JERSEY NONPROFIT AGENCIES TO HELP THE HOMELESS
Funding from HUD’s Continuum of Care program to provide housing and services to the homeless
WASHINGTON, DC – January 20, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-8) today announced U.S. Housing and Urban Development grants totaling more than $2.4 million nonprofit agencies servicing the Eight Congressional District to provide housing and services to help the homeless.
“These grants will help people in Paterson and throughout North Jersey to make the transition from surviving on the streets to maintaining productive and sustainable lives,” said Pascrell, a former Paterson mayor who was reappointed this month to the House Ways and Means Committee. “For many people, the first step to reassembling a broken life is getting a roof over their heads, but these agencies do so much more. I am proud and grateful of the people who work in these agencies that received these grants. They not only meet the immediate needs of the homeless. They treat them as the human beings that they are, each with an unfulfilled potential to become active and connected members of their communities. They can count on me to continue fighting to make sure they all get the federal support they deserve.”
The recipients of the grants in the 8th Congressional District are:
• Paterson YMCA, $1,021,440
• The City of Paterson’s Housing Authority, Paterson, $257,892
• The Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark, $408,664
• Isaiah House, Inc., East Orange, $249,495
• St. Joseph’s Path, Passaic, $190,452
• Passaic County Permanent Housing Project, $130,652
• The New Jersey Community Development Corporation, Paterson, $82,934
• The Hispanic Multi Purpose Service Center, Paterson, $41,902
• St. Philips Ministry of the United Methodist Church, Paterson, $63,461
HUD’s Continuum of Care grants provide permanent and transitional housing to homeless persons as well as services including job training, health care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment and child care. Continuum of Care grants are awarded competitively to local programs to meet the needs of their homeless clients. These grants fund a wide variety of programs from street outreach and assessment programs to transitional and permanent housing for homeless persons and families.
Most of the agencies received grants through HUD’s Supportive Housing Program, a sub-grant of the Continuum of Care, which is designed to develop supportive housing and services that will allow homeless persons to live as independently as possible.
Assistance in the Supportive Housing Program is provided to help homeless persons meet three overall goals:
• achieve residential stability
• increase their skill levels and/or incomes
• obtain greater self-determination (i.e., more influence over decisions that affect their lives)
The Paterson YMCA, Paterson Housing Authority and St. Joseph’s Path received grants through the Shelter Plus Care program, also under the Continuum of Care. The program provides housing and supportive services on a long-term basis for homeless persons with disabilities – primarily those with serious mental illness, chronic problems with alcohol and/or drugs, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or related diseases – and their families who are living in places not intended for human habitation (e.g., streets) or in emergency shelters.
