WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 10, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — The Assembly Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee advanced bipartisan legislation to extend the eligibility for the veterans’ property tax deduction to residents of continuing care retirement communities. The proposal is sponsored by Assembly Republicans Declan O’Scanlon and Caroline Casagrande.

“Our policies should recognize our brave veterans for the sacrifices they made while keeping us safe and protecting our freedoms,” O’Scanlon, R-Monmouth, said. “The property taxes that are paid by continuing care retirement communities are passed through to residents. If those residents are veterans, then they should be eligible for this property tax deduction.”
The legislation, A-1969, would extend the property tax deduction granted to honorably discharged veterans and their spouses to those in continuing care communities. Voters would have to approve changing the constitution to permit the property tax deduction extension.
“New Jersey voters are grateful to our heroes who left their families behind and put themselves in danger to preserve the personal liberties we enjoy every day,” Casagrande, R-Monmouth, said. “This is a small token of thanks to some amazing people who did so much for us.”
