Groups aim to help N.J. residents focus on financial literacy and the basics of buying a home

EDISON, N.J. – June 2, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — The New Jersey Association of REALTORS® Housing Opportunity Foundation, Inc. (NJARHOF) is proud to announce its latest endeavor to educate and empower New Jersey’s consumers. Through its Helping Hands Towards Homeownership program, NJARHOF will be partnering with the Somerset County Coalition on Affordable Housing (SCCOAH) and TD Bank to present a financial literacy workshop on June 9th and June 16th at the Hunterdon/Somerset Association of REALTORS®‘ office.

The two-part financial literacy seminar is free to the public and will take place from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on both evenings at 3461 US Highway 22 East, Building B, in Branchburg, N.J. The workshop material is non-sequential, so attendance at both seminars is encouraged but not required.

The curriculum, which was established as part of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s (FDIC) Credit Sense and Cash & Debt Management programs, will cover various areas of financial education such as borrowing basics, how to manage credit, loans, and goal-setting. The workshop is designed to help those with limited financial knowledge to learn valuable information and achieve independence in today’s marketplace.

“With increasing options for personal finance in today’s environment, there are also increases in risk,” said NJARHOF President Christina P. Clemans. “The foundation of this educational series is to focus on helping individuals get their own ‘financial houses’ in order so that one day they can become homeowners.”

Throughout the summer and fall, NJARHOF will be scheduling future seminars on financial literacy in various locations throughout the state. To register for this seminar or for more information on future NJARHOF programs, contact Melissa Decker at MDecker (at) njar (dot) com.
