Menendez, Lautenberg Announce More than $6 Million for Community Development, Affordable Housing
Newark – June 6, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) today announced that Asbury Park, Atlantic City, Long Branch, Middletown and Monmouth County will receive a total of more than $6 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for community and economic development and to provide emergency shelter and affordable housing opportunities for low-income families.
“These investments are incredibly important to our efforts to revitalize communities, create economic opportunity and expand emergency and affordable housing for our most vulnerable New Jersey families,” said Senator Menendez.
“These federal grants will help provide New Jersey families with safe, affordable housing options and improve neighborhoods,” said Senator Lautenberg, a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which funds these grants. “I will continue fighting to make these crucial federal investments in New Jersey communities so that every family has access to quality housing.”
The funds were awarded through HUD programs:
CDBG provides grants for economic and community revitalization and to develop viable housing options in low to middle income areas.
HOME provides grants to states and localities to fund a wide range of activities to expand affordable housing for low income individuals and families.
ESG offers grants to expand and improve the quality of homeless shelters.
