Menendez, Booker Announce $1.29M in HIV/AIDS Housing Assistance Funding for NJ Department of Health

WASHINGTON – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker (both D-N.J.) announced today that the New Jersey Department of Health has been awarded $1,295,910 in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS Program (HOPWA) to provide tenant-based rental assistance and supportive services for 35 post-incarcerated individuals with HIV/AIDS and their families.

“Having a stable housing situation is crucial for individuals living with HIV/AIDS, so that they are able to maintain complex treatment regimens that benefit their health,” said Sen. Menendez. “I’m pleased that this funding will ensure that these individuals will have access to the services they and their families need in order to build a better future.”

“New Jersey has one of the largest populations of residents living with HIV/AIDS in the nation, so we have an obligation to ensure they have the resources necessary to receive the proper care,” said Sen. Booker. “This federal funding will be a critical lifeline to individuals with HIV/AIDS transitioning from prison by helping to provide them and their families the safe and affordable housing they need to rebuild their lives.”
The HOPWA Program, which began in 1992, gives grants to states, cities and local organizations in order to provide housing and supportive services for low-income individuals with HIV/AIDS and their families. By providing assistance with housing and related services, the HOPWA program helps persons living with HIV/AIDS enter into housing, access and remain in medical care, and adhere to complex treatment regimens.
