Lautenberg Announces More Than $27 Million in Employment, Housing, Education Funds

-

WASHINGTON, DC – April 27, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) today announced New Jersey will receive more than $27 million in federal funding to put people back to work, reduce poverty, revitalize low-income communities and improve self-sustainability for low-income families.  These Community Services Block Grant Program (CSBG) funds from the Economic Recovery Act will be distributed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, which will then disburse the money to local communities.

“As we work to revitalize our economy, we need to do everything we can to help families find jobs, keep their lights on and keep food on the table,” Sen. Lautenberg said.  “These new federal funds will help communities across New Jersey with critical employment, housing and educational support to get through these tough economic times.”

New Jersey is slated to receive $27,391,962 as part of the CSBG program, which was created in 1981 to help lessen poverty in communities throughout the nation. The funds provide a range of services and activities to assist the needs of low-income individuals including the homeless, migrants and the elderly. Grant amounts are determined by a formula based on each state’s population.

Groups receiving funds under the CSBG program are required to provide services and activities addressing employment, education, better use of available income, housing, nutrition, emergency services and health care.  In recognition of the intent of Recovery Act funds, eligible entities will be encouraged to support employment-related services and activities that create and sustain economic growth.
