Menendez, Chiesa Announce $29.5 Million in Federal Sandy Relief for Buyouts of 129 Sayreville Properties

Funds will be applied to acquisition and demolition costs

WASHINGTON, DC – June 25, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Jeff Chiesa (R-NJ) today announced $29,455,545 in federal Sandy relief for the N.J. Department of Environmental Protection for the acquisition and demolition of 129 flood-prone properties in Sayreville. The grants are provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Public Assistance grant program.

“This is most welcome relief for Sayreville residents who have been in harm’s way in flooding instances prior to Sandy, and who endured the devastating flooding Sandy wrought,” said Sen. Menendez, who helped lead the New Jersey delegation in the fight for federal Sandy relief. “That’s why I am grateful for this much-needed Sandy relief that will enable individuals and families to rebuild their lives without the threat of dangerous flooding, as well as provide substantive flood mitigation for the Sayreville community. This is a great step forward in making New Jersey better and stronger that we were before the storm.”

“The ongoing costs associated with recovery and rebuilding are substantial. These funds will go a long way to making required improvements to avoid damage in flood-prone zones,” said Sen. Chiesa.

In January, President Barack Obama signed the Superstorm Sandy Supplemental Appropriations bill into law, bringing the total Sandy aid enacted by Congress to $60.2 billion. The funding package included federal aid to help homeowners, businesses, and communities recover, and resources to rebuild coastal, transportation, and water infrastructure.

Public Assistance grants are awarded by FEMA on a rolling basis after receiving applications from the state, which coordinates the process with local governments.
