Christie Administration Announces $400,000 Homelessness Prevention Grant as Part of Christie Administration’s Season of Service

CAMDEN – December 19, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — As part of the Christie Administration’s Season of Service, Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa today visited Catholic Charities, Diocese in Camden, Inc. to announce a $400,000 grant for the agency’s work to help the homeless in Cumberland County.

“With December upon us and the winter quickly approaching, we have an obligation to make sure that no one is left out in the cold,” Attorney General Chiesa said. “The grant provided today by the Christie Administration will go a long way towards helping New Jerseyans transition into permanent housing.”

The grant, which is administered by the Department of Community Affairs, will be used to provide temporary rental assistance and stabilization services to help individuals and families living on the streets or in emergency shelters obtain permanent housing. Catholic Charities can also use the grant to assist households in imminent risk of homelessness due to an eviction.

Established in 1936, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Camden, Inc. is a non-profit, 501 (c)(3), multi-service, non-sectarian faith-based organization serving the six southern counties of New Jersey. The organization has a long history of case management support skills and effective results in helping to stabilize households to avoid homelessness, or rapidly re-house families that are already homeless.

Today’s event is part of the Christie Administration’s second-annual Season of Service. Last year, Cabinet members participated in approximately 60 events across the state — from serving meals on wheels to shut-ins and helping to serve and stock food pantries to stuffing care packages for military service members overseas and holiday letter writing to troops abroad to collecting and delivering coats to homeless shelters.

Governor Christie has emphasized the importance of community service since his inaugural in 2010. Today, approximately 1.5 million New Jerseyans contribute about 170 million hours of service each year, bringing a positive influence to neighborhoods and communities
