Lautenberg, Menendez Announce More Than $300,000 For Homeless Veterans In Camden
WASHINGTON, DC – June 14, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senators Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) today announced more than $300,000 in federal funding to provide homeless veterans in Camden with housing assistance and medical treatment.
“We must do everything we can to provide our veterans who have bravely served our nation with adequate housing and support services,” said Senator Lautenberg, a member of the Senate Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development. “It is unacceptable that so many of our veterans remain homeless, and this funding will help struggling veterans in Camden receive the help they need.”
“No one who has served our nation should himself living on the streets,” said Menendez. “Our military personnel have offered their lives to defend us, and as a grateful nation, we must do all we can to ensure that all of our veterans have the services, support and shelter they need.”
The Housing Authority of the City of Camden will use the funds, from the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program, to provide housing vouchers to 50 homeless veterans in Camden. The federal resources also will be used to provide recipients with supportive services and case management through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The HUD-VASH program, which began in 2008, awards funding based on demonstrated need in communities with high numbers of homeless veterans, and works with local housing authorities and VA facilities to provide permanent housing and medical assistance.
