WASHINGTON, DC – June 17, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker (both D-NJ) today announced $1.27 million in federal grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Housing Counseling Program to 13 local agencies throughout New Jersey.

“This funding will go a long way in empowering New Jerseyans with the knowledge and tools necessary to stay in their homes or access affordable housing,” said Senator Menendez, who has led the effort in the U.S. Senate to keep HUD’s Housing Counseling Program funded. “By supporting quality housing counseling services, we are making a sound investment in helping ensure New Jerseyans obtain, maintain, and preserve their homes by making better informed choices. That is why I will continue fighting to fund our local housing counseling organizations, so they can continue helping families make well-informed decisions about their housing and financial stability.”

“The funds announced today will help broaden homeownership opportunities and expand access to affordable housing for New Jerseyans,” said Sen. Booker. “Investing in these types of housing counseling programs help low and moderate income families understand their housing options and make informed choices. The housing counseling organizations throughout our state have an important role to play in many communities and I am committed to making sure federal resources are available to them.”

HUD’s Housing Counseling Program provides services to homebuyers, homeowners, low- to moderate-income renters, and the homeless in order to expand homeownership opportunities and improve access to affordable housing. Counselors provide guidance and advice to help families and individuals improve their housing conditions and meet responsibilities of tenancy and homeownerships. Counselors also help borrowers avoid inflated appraisals, unreasonably high interests rates, unaffordable repayment terms, and other conditions that can result in the loss of equity, increased debt, default, and foreclosure.
