REP. PASCRELL ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $500,000 IN FEDERAL HUD GRANTS FOR PATERSON, PASSAIC COUNTY ORGANIZATIONS TO HELP THE HOMELESS

WASHINGTON, DC – December 20, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-8) today announced a total of $584,259 in federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grants were awarded to local organizations and nonprofit agencies that serve the Eighth Congressional District to provide housing and services to help the homeless.

“As Charles Dickens wrote, this is the time of year when want is most keenly felt. I would humbly add that need is felt even more keenly,” said Pascrell. “This funding will help some of our best local organizations do some of their best work in providing for the homeless. I am proud and grateful of the people who work in these agencies that received these grants. They not only meet the immediate needs of the homeless. They treat them as the human beings that they are, each with an unfulfilled potential to become active and connected members of their communities. They can count on me to continue fighting to make sure they all get the federal support they deserve.”

The recipients of the grants in the 8th Congressional District are:

Paterson Housing Authority, Creech Permanent Housing I, $132,504
Paterson Housing Authority, Independence House, $129,096
Eva’s Village Apartments, $121,824*
St. Philip’s Ministry of the United Methodist Church, $63,461
St. Joseph’s Harbor House, $47,736*
St. Paul’s Community Development Corporation, $47,736*
Hispanic Multi Purpose Service Center, $41,902

*administered through the Passaic County Department of Human Services.

HUD’s Continuum of Care grants provide permanent and transitional housing to homeless persons as well as services including job training, health care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment and child care. Continuum of Care grants are awarded competitively to local programs to meet the needs of their homeless clients. These grants fund a wide variety of programs from street outreach and assessment programs to transitional and permanent housing for homeless persons and families.

Agencies received grants through HUD’s Supportive Housing Program, a sub-grant of the Continuum of Care, which is designed to develop supportive housing and services that will allow homeless persons to live as independently as possible. Other HUD sub grant programs that made this round of funding possible are the Shelter Plus Care Program and the Section 8 Moderate Rehabilitation for SRO Dwelling for Homeless Individuals.
